Definition

A tendency to share resources (time, money, attention) above the contextual norm.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Shares minimally; giving is rare and tightly controlled.

High Pole

Shares regularly while maintaining personal sustainability.

Reference

Generous selectively: toward respected targets, restrained elsewhere.

Measure

Primary: Rate — relative share of resources given over time, normalized for total resources.

Measuring Methods

Longitudinal tracking of giving (time/money/attention) + normalization for income and load.

Empirical Anchor

Generosity / charitable giving behavior; prosocial spending (Dunn et al., 2008); VIA generosity strength.

Notes

Generosity is not the same as altruism: generosity may be low-risk; altruism tolerates real cost.
