Definition

An automatic drive to seek and accumulate resources (food, money, assets, information, useful connections) as a means of increasing personal robustness.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low resource drive: weak acquisition pull; satisfied with minimal; fewer initiatives to expand resources.

High Pole

Strong acquisition pull; persistent resource-seeking; accumulation and expansion become central.

Reference

Resource matters, yet the person balances it rather than making it the sole aim.

Measure

Resource-seeking intensity (frequency and persistence of resource-expanding actions).

Measuring Methods

• Behavioral audit: initiatives per month/quarter.
• “Enough vs. more” scenarios → preference.
• History: income/asset growth pursuit patterns.

Empirical Anchor

Resource acquisition drive / achievement motivation (McClelland, 1961); accumulation motive; materialistic values (Kasser & Ryan, 1993).

Notes

• Distinct from ambition (Derived): this is a base strengthening drive, not a social goal.
• Risks at MIN: vulnerability under crisis.
