Definition

The ability to create conditions in which others feel safe enough to cooperate, disclose truthfully, and take joint risks.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Others remain guarded; cooperation stays minimal and brittle.

High Pole

Psychological safety and cooperation emerge quickly; disclosure and coordinated action increase.

Reference

Strong one-to-one; weaker in groups or competitive environments.

Measure

Primary: Speed — time-to-trust under matched conditions.

Measuring Methods

Trust protocols (joint tasks, calibrated information sharing, micro-risk taking) + behavioral indicators; control roles and incentives.

Empirical Anchor

Trust-building / swift trust (Meyerson et al., 1996); trust development (Lewicki & Bunker, 1996).

Notes

Not the same as kindness: trust is built through predictability, competence, honesty, and boundaries.
