Definition

Fast reading of motives, status dynamics, unwritten rules, and latent tensions in groups without extended analysis.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Misses undercurrents; violates unwritten rules; misreads power and incentives.

High Pole

Quickly grasps “who influences what,” where tension sits, and what is really driving behavior.

Reference

Strong in familiar cultures; weaker in new social ecosystems.

Measure

Primary: Accuracy — correctness of predictions about motives, alliances, and conflict trajectories.

Measuring Methods

Observe real/simulated group interaction → generate predictions → compare with subsequent outcomes and independent coding.

Empirical Anchor

Social intuition / social perceptiveness (Riggio, 1986); thin-slice accuracy (Ambady & Rosenthal, 1992); interpersonal sensitivity.

Notes

Different from general observation: the target is social power and incentive structure.
