Definition

Ability to break complex goals into manageable components and elaborate a viable execution sequence.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Sees a “monolith”; acts chaotically; misses dependencies.

High Pole

Identifies subgoals, dependencies, critical path, and clear completion criteria.

Reference

Decomposes reasonably but leaves gaps or unnecessary steps.

Measure

Primary: Granularity (quality of decomposition resolution).
Secondary: Coherence (dependency logic and sequencing).

Measuring Methods

Provide a complex goal → request decomposition and plan → score completeness and dependency structure.

Empirical Anchor

Problem decomposition / problem structuring (Simon, 1973); means-ends analysis; divide-and-conquer strategy.

Notes

Related to prioritization (D005) but distinct: prioritization selects; decomposition structures.
