Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Improvisation preference: structure feels effortful or restrictive; the person tends to act situationally and adapt on the fly.
Naturally builds structure and prefers working from it; improvisation is available but not the default mode.
Both modes are accessible; choice depends on task and stakes.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• Observation in novel tasks: does the person build a skeleton before moving?
• Self-report verified against behavioral traces.
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: repeated mistakes, avoidable inefficiency.
• Risks at MAX: rigidity, weak adaptation, getting “stuck in the plan.”
