Definition

A stable motivation to occupy the top position, control decisions, set rules, lead others, and expand influence. This includes both internal motivation and behavioral expression.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Non-dominance orientation: rarely seeks dominance; prefers role equality, autonomy without controlling others, or comfortable followership.

High Pole

Actively seeks dominance; wants to be in charge, set frames, and allocate resources.

Reference

Contextual: dominance emerges with competence/responsibility; otherwise moderate.

Measure

Control-takeover frequency: how often the person initiates control, role allocation, and final say in group tasks.

Measuring Methods

• Group-task observation: who takes leadership, how fast, how forcefully.
• Real-life pattern audit: tendency to “take over” decisions.
• Power-distribution scenarios: choosing “be in charge” vs. “be equal.”

Empirical Anchor

Dominance motivation (Maner & Case, 2016); social dominance orientation (Pratto et al., 1994); interpersonal circumplex — dominance axis (Wiggins, 1979).

Notes

Commonly moralized; treat as control-seeking propensity, not ‘good/bad’.
• Distinct from assertiveness (C055): one may be dominance-motivated yet express it softly, or be assertive without wanting dominance.
• Risks at MIN: avoiding needed leadership responsibility.
• Risks at MAX: conflict, suppression of others, toxic leadership patterns.
