Version v1.3.2

Definition

An intrinsic pull toward leading: setting direction, making group-level decisions, taking coordination responsibility, and owning outcomes.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low leadership drive: avoids leading; prefers following, executing, staying out of responsibility for others.

High Pole

Actively seeks to lead; naturally becomes the coordinator and decision center.

Reference

Leads situationally (when competent/needed) but does not seek leadership everywhere.

Measure

Voluntary leader-role uptake frequency in group tasks.

Measuring Methods

• Leaderless group tasks → who steps in.
• Project history: how often the person initiated and “led.”
• Observation: goal initiation, role distribution, decision ownership.

Empirical Anchor

Leadership drive / leadership motivation (Chan & Drasgow, 2001); dominance — prosocial leadership variant (Maner & Case, 2016).

Notes

• Distinct from dominance (C054): leadership can be soft; dominance is pressure/power.
• Risks at MIN: missed influence; dependency on others’ leadership.
• Risks at MAX: power struggles, chronic conflict.
