Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Gain orientation: losses feel relatively manageable; the person is more opportunity-oriented and less constrained by fear of downside.
Losses feel extremely costly; the person avoids decisions with downside even when expected value is high.
Losses are unpleasant but not paralyzing; risk is taken when value is clear.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• Real-world decision audit: avoidance of downside risk controlling for value.
• Simplified loss/gain behavioral tasks.
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: underweighting losses, impulsive betting.
• Risks at MAX: stagnation, growth refusal, “protection at any cost.”
