Definition

A self-conscious episode triggered by public degradation or forced status loss, organizing withdrawal and/or retaliatory anger, with a strong focus on injustice and power asymmetry.

Mechanism

Status-degradation detector identifies external agent as cause; shame + injustice systems co-activate, producing withdrawal/retaliation conflict.

Trigger–Appraisal–Function

• Trigger: Public degradation, forced status loss, or coercive shaming under power asymmetry.
• Appraisal: “I’m being degraded; this is unjust and I’m trapped.”
• Function: Protective withdrawal and/or retaliatory mobilization under social threat.

Observable Output

• Withdrawal and shutdown, OR counter-attack anger (bimodal).
• High injustice focus; revenge fantasies (episodic) can arise.
• Avoidance of humiliating context; guarding of status cues.
• Somatic: heat, tension; shame-like constriction with anger edge.

Episode Profile

Onset: seconds–minutes. Peak: spike with public exposure. Duration: minutes–hours. Recovery: may linger; resolves with exit, support, or restoration of dignity. KEY METRIC: intensity; retaliation vs withdrawal; recovery to normal social agency.

Chronic grievance stance; generalized mistrust of evaluation contexts; revenge-planning loops.
