Emotional LayerMML-1

Version v2.0

Definition

A self-conscious episode elicited by perceived exposure of the self as defective or socially unacceptable, organizing hiding, submission, and reputational damage control.

Mechanism

Social-evaluation alarm detects self-as-defective exposure; visibility-reduction and appeasement systems activate to limit reputational damage.

Trigger–Appraisal–Function

• Trigger: Social exposure (public mistake, ridicule, unwanted visibility, status demotion).
• Appraisal: Global negative self-evaluation under an audience: “They see me as unfit.”
• Function: Reduce visibility and signal appeasement to limit reputational damage.

Observable Output

• Withdrawal/hiding: gaze aversion, reduced speech, leaving the interaction.
• Appeasement/submission: reduced assertion, compliance, ‘smallness’ cues.
• Evaluation-cue sensitivity: rapid attention to faces, tone, judgment signals.
• Somatic: heat/blushing, constriction, freeze-like stillness (variable).

Episode Profile

Onset: seconds–minutes. Peak: spikes with increased attention/publicity. Duration: minutes–hours; may recur in waves via replay. Recovery: resolves with re-inclusion/normalization or exit; can bias future avoidance. KEY METRIC: peak urge-to-hide; recovery time to normal social engagement.

Dysregulation Risk

Concealment spirals; harsh self-attack; replay/rumination; chronic visibility avoidance. Shame is the primary fuel for Q025Shame Spiral.

Change Potential

Regulation Trainability = Medium. Susceptibility Shift = Medium (context/culture dependent; safety cues and corrective experiences).

Empirical Anchor

Self-conscious emotion (Tangney & Dearing, 2002); global self-evaluation (Lewis, 1971); shame-rage spiral (Scheff & Retzinger, 1991).
