Definition

Willingness to deviate from majority opinion when warranted rather than conform automatically for belonging.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

High conformity: readily aligns with the group despite private disagreement.

High Pole

High nonconformism: maintains independent position under social pressure while remaining coherent and constructive.

Reference

Nonconforming in technical/professional domains, conforming in social/status domains.

Measure

Primary: Resistance to Social Pressure — ability to preserve one’s position under majority pressure.

Measuring Methods

Group-pressure vignettes and low-harm pressure paradigms + analysis of real instances of speaking up vs staying silent.

Empirical Anchor

Nonconformism / independence of judgment (Asch, 1956 inverse); uniqueness need (Snyder & Fromkin, 1977); counterconformity.

Notes

Not contrarianism for its own sake: healthy nonconformism is evidence-anchored.
