Group Belonging Need

B14 Instinctive Core
Core LayerMML-1

Version v1.3.2

Definition

How strongly a person needs to belong: being accepted, having a “tribe/community,” and sharing a “we-identity.”

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low belonging need: belonging matters little; the person is socially autonomous and comfortable without a “tribe.”

High Pole

Belonging matters greatly; isolation is painful; the person actively seeks groups and acceptance.

Reference

Needs belonging to 1–2 key groups, not to everyone.

Measure

Isolation-discomfort intensity.

Measuring Methods

• Social exclusion scenarios → reaction intensity.
• History: persistent community-seeking patterns.
• Behavior: willingness to self-modify for acceptance.

Empirical Anchor

Need to belong (Baumeister & Leary, 1995); belongingness (Maslow, 1943); social identity (Tajfel & Turner, 1979).

Notes

• Distinct from team orientation (C076): team orientation is coordination; belonging need is acceptance hunger.
• Risks at MIN: social detachment.
• Risks at MAX: conformity; self-dissolution.
