Version v1.2.4

Definition

Breadth and depth of knowledge that is meaningfully connected and applicable, not merely recalled.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Narrow, weakly connected knowledge; poor application.

High Pole

Broad and deep knowledge base; well-linked; readily usable in reasoning and practice.

Reference

Knowledge exists but is either narrow or poorly integrated.

Measure

Primary: Breadth.
Secondary: Depth.

Measuring Methods

Knowledge + application tasks (concept use, cross-linking), not just recall.

Empirical Anchor

Erudition / breadth of knowledge; polymathic competence; general knowledge / crystallized intelligence (Cattell, 1963).

Notes

Distinct from general intelligence; this is a content-rich, connected knowledge profile.
