Version v1.2.4

Definition

The capacity to sustain high-quality thinking and attention under prolonged cognitive demand.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Rapid cognitive depletion: clarity drops, error rate rises, attention fragments early.

High Pole

Long-duration maintenance of quality: preserves clarity, structure, tempo, and accuracy across extended stretches.

Reference

Strong for 1–2 hours, then degrades noticeably without breaks or strategic restructuring.

Measure

Duration: length of time high-quality cognition is maintained.
• Stability: degree of quality degradation over time under sustained demand.

Measuring Methods

Long-form cognitive protocols; time-on-task degradation curves (accuracy/speed); sustained-attention and reasoning tasks.

Empirical Anchor

Cognitive endurance / sustained cognitive effort; vigilance decrement (Warm et al., 2008); mental fatigue research.

Notes

Distinct from D028Pain-of-Effort Tolerance: D025 is preserving cognitive quality over time; D028 is tolerating the felt discomfort of effort.
