Definition

A willingness to own commitments and consequences, avoiding reflexive blame-shifting and reliably moving from error to correction.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Externalization default: failures are explained away; commitments are weakly owned.

High Pole

Clear ownership: acknowledges contribution, repairs damage, and builds prevention against recurrence.

Reference

Strong in explicit rule-based contexts, weaker in gray zones and interpersonal conflict.

Measure

Consistency: stability of ownership behavior across contexts and incentives.
• Recovery: speed from error recognition to corrective action.

Measuring Methods

Commitment audits (promises → delivery); post-mortem reviews; 360 ratings of “ownership.”

Empirical Anchor

Notes
