Version v1.2.4

Definition

The skill of converting a desired behavior into a stable automatic routine across phases: initiation → repetition → consolidation.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Attempts remain “manual”: behaviors require sustained conscious push and tend to extinguish quickly.

High Pole

Rapid consolidation: reliably designs triggers, environment, and reinforcement so behaviors become self-running.

Reference

Can form habits for simple behaviors, but struggles with complex routines or when context is unstable.

Measure

Latency: time required for a target behavior to become stable/automatic.
• Consistency: durability of the habit after consolidation (resistance to extinction).

Measuring Methods

Longitudinal habit tracking; protocols capturing attempt → lapse → return cycles; A/B testing different habit designs (cueing, environment, reinforcement).

Empirical Anchor

Habit formation (Wood & Neal, 2007); habit loop — cue, routine, reward (Duhigg, 2012); automaticity (Bargh, 1994).

Notes

A meta-skill of behavioral engineering, not merely “willpower.”
