Emotional LayerMML-2

Version v2.0

Definition

An episodic prosocial response triggered by perceiving another’s suffering, organizing approach-to-help, soothing, and protective action.

Mechanism

Suffering-detection system activates caregiving/helping motivation; self-other distinction maintained (unlike empathic distress).

Trigger–Appraisal–Function

• Trigger: Perceiving another’s suffering or vulnerability.
• Appraisal: “They need help; I can alleviate.”
• Function: Mobilize caregiving and protective support.

Observable Output

• Approach-to-help; soothing actions; resource offering.
• Attentional focus on needs and relief pathways; reduced self-focus.
• Gentler tone; patience; protective boundary setting.
• Somatic: warmth/softening; sometimes tears.

Episode Profile

Onset: seconds–minutes. Peak: can deepen with contact. Duration: minutes–hours. Recovery: resolves after help/comfort; may leave fatigue if prolonged. KEY METRIC: helping behaviors; compassion fatigue markers.

Dysregulation Risk

Overextension and burnout; merging into empathic distress where self-other boundary blurs.

Change Potential

Regulation Trainability = Medium–High. Susceptibility Shift = Medium (exposure, norms, resources).

Empirical Anchor

Compassion vs empathic distress (Singer & Klimecki, 2014); compassion as approach emotion (Goetz et al., 2010).
