Definition
An acute episode elicited by appraising that available efforts cannot change an impending negative outcome, producing abrupt collapse of approach motivation and a shift toward withdrawal or urgent reliance on external support.
Mechanism
Futility-detector signals that no available action can alter the outcome; approach motivation collapses and help-signaling activates.
Trigger–Appraisal–Function
• Trigger: Appraisal that efforts cannot change an impending negative outcome.
• Appraisal: “No viable path; nothing will work.”
• Function: Terminate futile striving and signal need for external rescue/reframing.

Observable Output
• Collapse of approach motivation; withdrawal; reduced initiative.
• Cognitive narrowing to impossibility; difficulty generating options.
• Seeking rescue/help (or shutting down) depending on context.
• Somatic: heaviness, exhaustion; slowed behavior.

Episode Profile
Onset: minutes–hours. Peak: can feel sudden (‘drop’). Duration: hours. Recovery: eases with new options/support; may convert to sadness after acceptance. KEY METRIC: intensity of ‘no path’ appraisal; time to option generation.
Dysregulation Risk
Isolation and option collapse; globalizing beyond the situation into identity-level hopelessness.
Change Potential
Regulation Trainability = Medium. Susceptibility Shift = Medium (stress load, problem-solving support, cognitive flexibility).
Empirical Anchor
Hopelessness theory (Abramson et al., 1989); learned helplessness (Seligman, 1975); despair as motivational collapse.
