Social Adaptability

BD07 Empathy & Prosociality
Derived LayerMML-3

Version v1.2.4

Definition

The ability to adjust one’s social style to local norms (formality, pacing, boundaries) without losing identity or making gross errors.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Frequently mismatches norms; comes off inappropriate or tone-deaf.

High Pole

Quick calibration to context; stable competence across social ecosystems.

Reference

Good in familiar cultures; weaker in new ones.

Measure

Primary: Speed — time required to reach context-appropriate behavior in a new group.

Measuring Methods

New-group entry scenarios → independent ratings of appropriateness over time; control role and status.

Empirical Anchor

Social adaptability / social flexibility; social skill (Riggio, 1986); adaptive self-presentation.

Notes

Social intuition reads the room; adaptability changes the self-expression to fit it.
