Definition

The ability to develop others by transmitting not only knowledge, but methods, mental models, and criteria.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Teaches tasks but does not build autonomy or thinking structure.

High Pole

Produces accelerated growth; the mentee becomes independently competent.

Reference

Strong in own domain; weaker in broader cognitive or interpersonal development.

Measure

Primary: Growth Delta — measurable improvement of the mentee over a defined interval under matched conditions.

Measuring Methods

Pre/post skill assessment + controls for task difficulty and contact intensity.

Empirical Anchor

Mentorship skill / mentoring functions (Kram, 1985); developmental relationships; coaching competence.

Notes

Mentorship may be strict; it is not synonymous with kindness.
