Version v1.2.4

Definition

The ability to reduce tension and guide interaction from escalation toward functional dialogue.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Escalates unintentionally or freezes without resolution.

High Pole

Stops the “fire,” restores minimal safety, and returns interaction to task-relevant channel.

Reference

Works in mild conflict; breaks under personal attack.

Measure

Primary: Tension Reduction Speed — how quickly tension decreases after the intervention in protocol-defined scenarios.

Measuring Methods

Escalation simulations → pre/post ratings of tension by independent judges.

Empirical Anchor

De-escalation skill / de-escalation techniques; conflict resolution — cooperative approach (Deutsch, 1973).

Notes

De-escalation is not resolution; it is the stabilization phase.
