Definition

A tendency to state the point explicitly with minimal evasion when frankness is appropriate and constructive.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Over-indirectness; ambiguity; chronic “fog” and misalignment.

High Pole

Clear, efficient expression of the core point.

Reference

Direct in work domains; indirect in personal domains (or vice versa).

Measure

Primary: Explicitness — proportion of key claims stated clearly enough to minimize interpretation drift.

Measuring Methods

Dialogue analysis: number of clarifications needed, divergence of interpretations, time-to-alignment.

Empirical Anchor

Directness / communication directness; low-context communication (Hall, 1976); candor.

Notes

Explicitness is form, not moral truthfulness. Built on Directness (C088); distinct from Sincerity (D109) and from Prosocial Honesty Norm (C062).
