Definition

The skill of communicating difficult truths while preserving cooperation and minimizing unnecessary resistance or loss of face.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Either blunt damage or excessive avoidance; “burnt ground” outcomes.

High Pole

Truth is delivered precisely with relational preservation and minimal friction.

Reference

Strong with outsiders/clients; weaker with close or internal relations (or vice versa).

Measure

Primary: Friction Minimization — goal achievement with minimal relationship damage.

Measuring Methods

Difficult-message protocols → receiver ratings (clarity/respect/cooperation) + objective uptake.

Empirical Anchor

Diplomacy / diplomatic skill; political skill (Ferris et al., 2005); interpersonal influence through tact.

Notes

Distinct from tact: diplomacy is strategic relational engineering; tact is boundary sensitivity.
