Definition

The ability to generalize learning and apply it across domains rather than keeping it context-bound.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Knowledge remains “task-locked”; fails in structurally similar but surface-different contexts.

High Pole

Recognizes deep structure and transfers principles effectively to new domains.

Reference

Transfers only when similarity is obvious or explicitly cued.

Measure

Primary: Fidelity (low distortion of the transferred principle).
Secondary: Breadth (range of contexts it transfers to).

Measuring Methods

Train in Domain A → test in Domain B with isomorphic structure → score transfer quality.

Empirical Anchor

Knowledge transfer / transfer of training (Baldwin & Ford, 1988); analogical reasoning (Gentner, 1983); far transfer.

Notes

Distinct from D044: transfer is about cross-context generalization, not speed of initial learning.
