Core LayerMML-2

Version v1.3.2

Definition

Willingness to enter uncertain, evaluative social situations and to approach, speak, ask, and initiate, despite the risk of rejection.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Social inhibition: often holds back; avoids initiation, fears rejection, prefers not to “stand out.”

High Pole

Initiates easily; tolerates rejection and is willing to “step on stage.”

Reference

Contextual: higher in familiar contexts, lower in high-status/public settings.

Measure

Rejection threshold at which initiation stops: how much rejection/uncertainty the person can absorb.

Measuring Methods

• Real initiation tracking (calls, approaches, questions) → frequency and persistence.
• “Initiate N contacts” tasks → trajectory after rejections.
• Self-report cross-checked by behavior: initiation avoidance.

Empirical Anchor

Social boldness / extraversion — warmth+gregariousness facets (Costa & McCrae, 1992); approach in social contexts.

Notes

• Distinct from C069Social Anxiety: anxiety is affect; boldness is behavioral willingness to act.
• Risks at MIN: missed opportunities; social passivity.
• Risks at MAX: over-exposure; social mistakes.
