Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Meaning indifference: meaning has limited motivational weight; the person can operate for long periods in “do it because it’s required” mode without an internal “why.”
High need for meaning: actions are continually linked to values and purpose; perceived meaninglessness corrodes motivation quickly.
Meaning matters in core domains, while routine can be executed without continuous semantic fueling.

• Organizational observation: tolerance for bureaucratic action without clear purpose.
