External Control Tolerance

B03 Social Cognition & Self-Direction
Core LayerMML-2

Version v1.3.2

Definition

The ability to remain functional and psychologically steady under external control, such as rules, monitoring, checks, and constraints, even when they are imperfect.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

External control aversion: control quickly triggers irritation, motivation loss, or sabotage; the person deteriorates under checks, regulation, and being watched.

High Pole

Remains steady under external control; performance and composure persist even with dense reporting and oversight.

Reference

Handles control well when it feels fair; markedly worse when it feels absurd or distrust-based.

Measure

Performance preservation under control: how much quality/speed/cooperation drop as external control increases.

Measuring Methods

• Same-task comparison: monitored vs. unmonitored conditions.
• Observation during checks: affective reaction plus productivity.
• Real-world analysis: performance changes when reporting requirements intensify.

Empirical Anchor

Locus of control external orientation (Rotter, 1966); authoritarianism compliance (Altemeyer, 1981).

Notes

• Not the same as C031 (Autonomy Need): one may strongly need autonomy yet still pragmatically tolerate control to reach goals.
• Risks at MIN: conflict, exits, anti-organizational behavior.
• Risks at MAX: excessive tolerance of poor systems (conformity).
