Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Attention switching inertia: switching takes noticeable time, old context carries over, errors occur, and rules become confused.
Switching is fast and clean: context is released quickly, entry into the new context is rapid, and stable performance is achieved promptly.
Switching is generally adequate but slows under fatigue, stress, high cognitive load, or after extended concentration.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• Practical protocols: short alternating tasks with explicit context shifts; measure time to stability after each shift.
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: getting stuck, transitional errors, chronic sluggishness.
• Differs from C001Attentional Stability (sustaining vs. switching).
• Differs from C004Information Processing Speed (within-task speed vs. entry cost).
